Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
