Lackluster The Software Giant's Earnings Report Knock More Than $Seventy Billion Dollars From Valuation, Stoking AI Bubble Fears.

The tech firm's lackluster quarterly results have slashed over $70 billion from the worth of the software and data giant established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, adding to mounting apprehensions of a overheated market in artificial intelligence stocks.

Sharp Stock Fall Follows Sales Miss

Stock in the company fell sharply by over 11 percent in after-hours trading after it reported a disappointing 14 percent increase in sales to $16bn in the previous quarter, as it simultaneously disclosed plans to ramp up its artificial intelligence investment by around $15bn.

The enterprise recorded softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the period ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud computing division growing at a slower pace than projected, at thirty-four percent.

Market Concerns Over Spending and Debt

Markets were further let down by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent increase in revenues from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, investors were spooked by the firm's increased forecasts for AI investment. It now projects capital expenditure to jump by forty percent to $fifty billion dollars, with the vast majority of the increase directed toward building data centres.

This substantial investment strategy is set against a growing debt load, with Oracle's corporate debt having surged by 25 percent over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the report was not catastrophic, but it came to confirm fears around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an unknown timeline for profitability," commented a market analyst.

Wider Market Repercussions and Industry Concerns

Sustained exuberance about the capabilities of AI technology has fueled a sharp rise in company valuations in recent months, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who warn equity prices could correct sharply if investors become let down by the progress or adoption of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important tech player creating software for major firms worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in the cloud sector, there are growing questions about how reliant companies are growing on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle said that its metric of remaining performance obligations soared by four hundred and forty percent over the past year. However, analysts were wary when it emerged that these commitments were propelled by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are two solid customers, it will not allay concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are interdependent, which leaves it susceptible to a erosion of market faith," observed a market strategist.

"Overall, robust contract growth was not enough to calm anxiety about AI and the massive amount of capital expenditure required by companies to construct AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Shares

Other AI and tech-related stocks also fell in after-hours trading following the Oracle announcement. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price declined by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares tumbled by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
